Poor kids in the UK *

Summary:
The gap between rich and poor in the UK is biggest since WOII. Three-and-a-half million kids are living in poverty in Britain today. In a certain part of Leicester ¾ of the children live in low-income families, in Bradford it is four out of five. One in five of those families report skipping meals and with  single parent households, it happens twice as often. In some areas of Glasgow every single family lives below the poverty line. Families are living in poor conditions, without continuous electrics or light or with mold stains on the walls. Some statistics: Poor children are 2.5 times more likely to suffer chronic illness; 47% of children with asthma are from the poorest 10% of families; and 85% of children living in damp flats suffer breathing problems.

Own opinion:
I was quite shocked to see that this many children live below the poverty line in a developed country like Britain. The images were depressing, knowing that some of these children do not even have enough to eat. It is obvious that these children are more mature than their peers, who live in the wealthier areas of the country. I sincerely believe that the government should undertake action on this matter as soon as possible. For these are delicate children’s lives and bodies that are ruined.
